Stronger and safer communities in the East Midlands through sport

Ongoing developments with local projects and regional partners is giving sport and active recreation a role in involving local communities in the process of regeneration and renewal. Back to contents page

Key highlights

•Regeneration East Midlands hosts a community sport post to provide support to the Sport and Community Inclusion Network.

•Advocacy in Local Area Agreements in Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Derbyshire and Nottingham City ensures physical activity is included in future delivery plans.  The advocacy includes the production of the document, Changing Lives.

•A Sports Regeneration Manager is appointed for the Corby Sport Regeneration Partnership, which will be the basis for the local Community Sport Network.

•Braunstone Sport Action Zone received national recognition at the annual Sport England colleague conference and received a visit from the Sports Minister Richard Caborn.

Northampton Borough Council received £90,045 to appoint a community sports development worker to create opportunities for sport and physical activity in the Kings Heath area of Northampton.

The project is creating real opportunities for the people of Kings Heath by using under reduced resources such as the multi-use games area and an adventure centre. Even the heath at Kings Heath is utilised to provide regular group walks.

The impact of the project demonstrates how sport can provide tangible benefits in terms of community safety and the development of people in an area of deprivation.
