Increased participation in sport in the East Midlands

Nordic walking The year saw a strong focus and development of work ensuring sport featured in the local government agenda. Local Authorities deliver £100 million of investment every year in sport and active recreation in the East Midlands.

Key highlights

•£400,000 funding from Invest to Save Bid for Sports Improvement Project for County Sports Partnerships in Leicester-Shire & Rutland and Lincolnshire

•£36,000 secured from Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Local Government improvement project including the secondment of a regional officer to support local authorities. The project also identified 5 county champions to work 1 day a week to support the seconded officer.

•3 effective and evaluated regional local government improvement seminars delivered to 150 delegates in Derby, Lincoln and Northampton.

•Advocacy work in Lincolnshire with Local Authority Chief Executives’ group results in re launch of chief cultural/sport officers group.

•Sport England regional office conducted a Towards an Excellent Service (TAES) self assessment and constructed an improvement plan

•County Sports Partnerships in Leicester-Shire & Rutland and Lincolnshire commenced TAES self-assessments linked to the Invest to Save project.

•Worked with partners, including swimming, volleyball and cricket, to develop a National Governing Bodies version of TAES.

•English Federation of Disability Sport supported to use and develop TAES

•Successful Everyday Sport launch which secured significant media coverage. Ongoing support for partners, such as Northamptonshire Sport’s Everyday Sport week

•The national Active People Survey commenced interviews which when complete will provide a clear picture of participation and volunteering in sport & physical activity across all East Midlands local authorities.

•36 Active England projects on schedule and receiving external consultancy support

Nottinghamshire County Council was awarded £193,592 Active England funding for the appointment of six Community Sports Coaches to work across a range of clubs and schools in the county to create an innovative approach to delivering physical activity to young people.

The project is exceeding its participation target with initial projected figures showing a likely total of around 250,000 units of participation.
