BBC Midlands Sports Awards 2008 - 'Power of Sport Award 2008'
Sport England in the West Midlands has for the second year running sponsored and delivered the 'BBC Power of Sport Award'; ensuring that community sports projects receive the attention and accolades they so rightly deserve.

The 6 county sports partnerships in the region each nominated a project to go forward through a selection process supported by their partners. The six projects in contention for the 2008 award are:
Active Meadowlands (Coventry) - nominated by Coventry, Solihull & Warwickshire Sport
Birmingham Schools Rowing Project - nominated by Birmingham Sport and Physical Activity Partnership
Sport in the Hood (East Staffordshire) - nominated by Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent
Tennis: Stronger Mind and Body – Bishop’s Castle LTC (Shropshire) -
nominated by Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin
Wolverhampton Moving the Goalposts Satellite Sports Project - nominated by the Black Country Sports Partnership
Worcestershire Playground to Podium Project - nominated by the Sports Partnership Herefordshire & Worcestershire

The awards evening will take place on Sunday, 7 December and we will bring you news of all the winners, especially the winner of the 'Power of Sport Award 2008'.


Sport England strategy

Launched in June 2008, this 3-year strategy outlines how SE will develop community sport in England with the aims to: grow, sustain and excel.

SMS in the West Midlands
Sport England has developed nineteen sporting segments to help us understand the nations’ attitudes and motivations – why they play sport and why they don’t. We have produced maps for the nineteen segments for each of our six CSP area, all of our local authority areas and for the region as a whole.

Our researchers are on the phone again!
People in the West Midlands will again we asked about their levels of sporting activity as the second phase of Sport England's Active People Survey gets underway across the whole of England this month. The original survey, undertaken from October 2006 for 12 months, has now been analysed further against consumer trends data and Sport England has released some excellent market segmentation profiles that will help partners to market sport in their area.

County sports partnerships
The region now has the infrastructures in place at sub regional level, through these new strategic partnerships, to drive forward the key outcomes of increasing sports participation, developing community sport and widening access for under represented groups. It will be a challenging time for all concerned and we wish all the partnerships every success for the future.
