Government and Sport

The Government fully recognises the negative economic impact and social consequences of people not being physically active. In ‘Game plan’ (the Government’s long term vision for sport and physical activity) the cost of this physical inactivity in England is put, conservatively, at £2 billion a year
.

Game Plan sets the ambitious aim of ‘increasing’ significantly levels of sport and physical activity with the target of achieving 70% of the population being reasonably active (30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week) by 2020.

Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS)
The DCMS is the sponsoring body for Sport England and this is where Sport England receives it’s exchequer funds.

Strategic Lead for Sport

‘Sport means all forms of physical activity, through casual or organised participation, aimed at expressing or improving physical fitness and mental well-being, forming social relationships and obtaining results in competition at all levels’ Council for Europe Sport Charter.

Sport England has begun the process of making England the most active and successful sporting nation in the world and provides a strategic lead for sport in England and through the development of :

The National framework for Sport signals a new way of working through partnership. The Framework was developed through independent analysis of the facts and figures underpinning sport. Sport England commissioned The Henley Centre to analysis the key trends and issues and fifty ‘drivers’ were identified and consulted on.

The production of the National Framework for Sport also coincided with the work on the regional plan for sport and the modernisation of Sport England (England active / strategic overview )
