Strategy

Following the Government’s publication of Game Plan in December 2002, and extensive consultation in 2003, the Framework for Sport in England  (2.9Mb) was published early in 2004. In this document Lord Carter of Coles, the Chairman of the Main Sport England Board, set all the regions three key objectives: to reorganise, reform and re-focus.

The South East responded by publishing Mission: Possible, the South East Plan for Sport 2004-2008 (4842KB) in April 2004, which not only set the strategic framework for sport in the South East, but also set out a very clear mandate for action. This was not exclusive to Sport England South East, but was a call to action for all our regional stakeholders and partners, who contributed substantially to the document.
Work is underway to prepare our new regional plan for 2008/12. We held a first stakeholder event in July 2007 and will be engaging with partners further to build this report.

Sport England exists to sustain and increase participation in community sport. It is a non-departmental public body and Lottery distributor. It's ambition is to get two million people participating more in sport by 2012. It does this by promoting, advising and investing in community sport. Sport England has been a statutory consultee on planning applications affecting playing fields since August 1996. Sport England objects to any application that is detrimental to sport, unless alternative provision of at least equivalent value is found elsewhere.

Role
Sport England is the strategic lead for sport in the Region. We have four key cornerstones which define our role:

It is in this strategic context that we have developed and delivered our regional action plan as laid out in our Annual Report 2006/7 in partnership with our key partners and regional stakeholders.
