Support for the London Olympics must be stronger than ever
Sport England celebrated the IOC’s announcement that London will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 on the 6th July 2005. Although the entire country will benefit from the world’s biggest sporting event being staged in London, the terrible bombings in London, may mean that the Olympic dream is far from the public's mind.
Matt Delaney, Regional Director of Sport England in London said:
“This is a shocking chain of events to hit the capital at such a pivotal moment in history and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected in this difficult period. As a capital it is imperative that we continue to work together, stay focused on the Olympics and drive our energy into making London a better, much safer place. Sport England’s priority will be to support the Games in every way possible. London is committed to creating the very best sporting opportunities and delivering the best Olympics ever in a safe environment.”
Having been a major partner in the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games, Sport England recognises first hand the impact that major events can have in terms of regenerating communities, creating thousands of jobs and a thriving sporting culture.
Matt Delaney added:
“We have been heavily influential in the formation of the Olympic Park Sports Strategy and the community legacy plan for London. The London 2012 Olympics will not only improve the link between elite sport and community participation, it will also demonstrate the economic and social benefits of investment in sport. Sport England’s priority will be to turn the passion we have for sport into action and use the Olympics to make England a more active and successful sporting nation.”
