Sport England, the strategic lead for sport in England, is a finalist in the first e-Government National Awards for www.activeplaces.com, the authoritative database of sports and fitness facilities in England. The winner of the awards will be announced on the 19th January 2005 at the Institute of Directors in London.
Ian Fytche, Director of Strategy and Performance at Sport England said:
"This is the second award that Active Places has been short-listed for in the last few months and we are absolutely delighted. Moving forward we are using Active Places to get people into sport and help us reach our target of a 1% nationwide increase in sports participation each year.”
The e-Government National Awards will praise and recognise the best in UK e-Government, and highlight the important contributions made by e-Government to central and local Government service strategy. Sport England has been short listed for the ‘e-Government service uptake excellence in usership/user growth’ award.
Sport England created activeplaces.com to establish one authoritative database of sports facilities for England. With Lottery funding from Sport England and Big Lottery Fund, Sport England spent two years working closely with three commercial partners (Landmark, Leisure Database Company and PMP) and in July 2004 launched activeplaces.com with more than 10,000 facilities listed.
Activeplaces.com is now used by the public, central and local government, national governing bodies of sport, commercial organisations, applicants for funding and other organisations who are interested in identifying, using and planning sports facilities. Visitors use activeplaces.com as an online sports facility finder, searching by postcode, facility type or using a map of England.
Sport England is one of the finalists and will compete with other high profile organisations for the ‘e-Government service uptake excellence in usership/user growth’ award.
These include The Department for Education and Skills with their ‘need2know’, the Inland Revenue with their ‘Self Assessment Online Tax Return Service’, Preston City Council with their ‘Bridging the Digital Divide’, VOSA with their ‘Commercial Vehicle Industry Self Service Regulatory Service’. The Federation of Sports West Sports Organisations has also been shortlisted.
