South Hams district council is planning a major new settlement at Sherford, near Plymouth. The new community will have 2,500 dwellings by 2011 with a possible 4,500 built after that.

Oxford Brookes University (OBU) worked with the council, on behalf of Sport England, to develop a strategy for effective planning obligations from new housing in the predominantly rural district.

The pilot project commenced on 30 August 2002 and stages 1, 2 and 3 have now been completed.

The draft SPG will be presented to the council's executive for consideration in Autumn 2004. The SPG will form part of the a new robust local plan policy which will be introduced into the revised deposit local plan.

The adopted SPG will be posted on this page later this year.
