New Rugby League Volunteering Opportunities coming to the North West!
Children from Bolton are being invited to swing into action at Hayward Leisure Centre, Great Lever, on Tuesday (27 May) to begin a sporting journey that will see some of them representing their region at the Sportcity complex in Manchester. The Tri Golf mini-festival is part of the StreetGames project, itself is part of the Government’s RESPECT agenda, which is designed to bring doorstep sport to disadvantaged communities across ten boroughs in the North West.
Tri Golf is an introduction to the full game which can be played in any environment and is used to encourage youngsters to try the sport for the first time. Following the session, a team will be selected which will go forward to represent Bolton at the regional. The event is the first of around fifty mini-festivals in the sports of Rugby League, Futsal, StreetCheer, Handball and Tri Golf which will take place across the North West Further sessions will take place in Bolton at a later date, each focused on one of the other four sports.
The regional finale will take place on Friday August 29th at Sportcity in Manchester and feature around 1,500 young people from StreetGames projects across the North West, giving them the opportunity to experience competing in a major sports festival at an iconic North West sporting facility.
Stewart Kellett, Regional Director for Sport England in the North West, commented: “StreetGames is a fantastic initiative and creates a wide range of new youth participation and volunteering opportunities, sports events & competitions in the most deprived communities across the North West. I’d encourage the children of Bolton putt their best feet forward, come along on Tuesday and give themselves a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete at one of the most popular sporting venues in the North West.”
Paul Round, Head of Sports Services added: “Bolton is delighted to be involved in the StreetGames RESPECT project. It creates ground breaking opportunities and challenges for young people through sport that they would otherwise not have and will make a real difference to Bolton.”
The festivals which constitute the StreetGames RESPECT project are supported by the Sport England Lottery Funding, StreetGames charity and are managed by Sport4Life.
For further information or to get involved, children and parents can contact Anne-Marie Taylor or Neil Hart on 01204 334 145

How the project works
Ten regions across the North West hold mini-festivals in which local children, between the ages of 9 and 12, compete in five sports. The sports are Rugby League, Futsal, StreetCheer, Handball and Tri Golf. Each mini-festival will see the selection of one team for each sport which will then go on to represent the region at the regional finale at Sportcity on Friday 29 August 2008.
