Our values

Our values are more than words on a page, they impact everything we say and do

Our values are more than a series of words and pictures. They define who we are as an organisation and highlight what we do to go the extra mile that sets us apart.

From creating an organisation we all enjoy, believe and thrive in, to helping us recruit the right people to join our team, to our relationship with our stakeholders, to how we treat one another - our values run through everything.

We are... Collaborative

One team, committed to delivering together and working with others to make a difference to people’s lives.

What?

  • We believe in building strong, compelling partnerships, both among ourselves and with others, founded in integrity, honesty and trust.
  • We work together as one team, with a shared mission: balancing listening, questioning and debate, to find common ground.
  • We know when to ask for help, to offer support and to step back, because we care about each other and trust each other to do the right thing.
  • We are more powerful in our combined contributions, enjoying the opportunity to make the most of our collective strengths.

Why?

Sport England cannot achieve its ambitions alone. To make a difference, we are dependent on effective partnerships and relationships both within our organisation and externally.

We must therefore work effectively with ourselves and others to achieve our mission to transform lives through sport and physical activity.

How?

The behaviours of someone demonstrating this value would include:

  • Actively working with teams across Sport England to maximise the impact of investment, identifying at the start of any piece of work or project how it can deliver for the organisation as a whole, rather than just one part of the business.
  • Building positive respectful working relationships with both colleagues and partners at all levels that enable the individual, team and Sport England to collectively meet the organisation’s goals.
  • Demonstrating a strong ability to be a team player by volunteering assistance, supporting and recognising the contribution of others and fostering a positive team spirit and sense of enjoyment of the work that we do.
  • Effectively communicate and network to influence others to work towards individual, team and organisational goals by sharing ideas, information, expertise and knowledge.
  • Actively seeking the views and opinions of others and being welcoming to colleagues who share their opinions to shape work moving forwards.
  • Responding effectively to the needs of others (customers, colleagues, funding recipients and others) and focusing upon delivering a high-quality service.
  • Able to manage conflict and seek resolutions that are beneficial to all parties.

We are... Ambitious

Determined in pursuit of our goals, prioritising work and partnerships that will most advance our mission, help us success and make a positive impact on the nation.

What?

  • We are clear and focussed on the scale and challenge of our mission to transform the health and wellbeing of the nation.
  • We bring energy and enthusiasm to the pursuit of our goals, striving always to discover new ways of working whilst keeping the ‘why’ in mind.
  • We aim high, think big and work hard – individually and collectively – to deliver a positive impact.
  • We navigate complexity skilfully, taking calculated risks that help us succeed without compromising our quality or standards.

Why?

Sport England has a big ambition to transform the lives of the nation through sport and physical activity – such ambition requires focus, prioritisation, energy, commitment, consistently high standards and a ‘can do’ attitude from everyone.

How?

The behaviours of someone demonstrating this value would include:

  • Takes personal responsibility, holds themselves to account to do what is right and deliver on their promises.
  • Exercises leadership, initiates action, gives direction and takes responsibility for activity.
  • Clearly plans activities well in advance, monitors against milestones and is able to be flexible and considers any changing circumstances.
  • Structure arguments, proposals and information in ways that are compelling, engaging and meet the needs of the audience.
  • Demonstrate commitment to, and pride in their work and working for Sport England.
  • Use sound judgement, evidence and knowledge to have the courage to make a difference.
  • Champion enthusiasm and positivity across Sport England, seeking to create an environment of which it is fun to be a part.
  • Maintain a positive outlook while at work and champion the role of Sport England.

We are... Inclusive

Harnessing our collective strength and respecting difference to create the conditions for everyone to engage and to excel.

What?

  • We value diverse perspectives, and treat everyone with dignity and respect.
  • We feel able to share our ideas, and we listen to the voices of others
  • We respect each other, always mindful of the impact of our thoughts, words and behaviour.
  • We seek to unite, through embracing and learning from our diversity and our differences.

Why?

Sport England is driven by the belief that everyone should have the right to benefit from sport and physical activity regardless of age, background or ability.

We know that by being more inclusive we will make better decisions, be better able to meet the needs of the breadth of audiences we serve and ultimately actively reduce the inequalities present in sport and physical activity.

How?

The behaviours of someone demonstrating this value would include:

  • Demonstrating an empathy for and appreciation of difference - both within Sport England and importantly within society and the nation as a whole.
  • Behaving ethically and with integrity
  • Putting people first, caring about and positively supporting colleagues whether they are peers, line managers or direct reports.
  • Showing respect and sensitivity towards difference and treating everyone with dignity and respect.
  • Valuing all voices and actively seeking to engage diverse thinking.

We are... Innovative

Curious, optimistic and relentless, we question established ways of working and learn from each other and from our experiences.

What?

  • We are not content with the expected and familiar.
  • We embrace change, are willing to take risks and do not stand still in pursuit of our mission
  • We celebrate our successes and learn quickly from our mistakes, avoiding apportioning blame.
  • We have the confidence to positively encourage and embrace new ideas.

Why?

To change the behaviour of the nation we need to dare to think, work and behave differently.

Just offering the same thing will lead to the same results. We must be committed to continuously learning from our past, our partners and each other.

How?

The behaviours of someone demonstrating this value would include:

  • Being entrepreneurial, thinking broadly and strategically to challenge the status quo and realise individual or organisational goals
  • Identifying and pursuing new ideas, insights and experiences to create and deliver effective change and new ways of working
  • Unreservedly owning, supporting and/or driving change at a team and organisational level
  • Gathering, analysing and questioning data from a range of sources to further understanding of an issue and create workable solutions and support decision making
  • Actively developing expertise through seeking out learning opportunities to develop self and team
  • Listening, and acting upon performance feedback that is provided by others, and being willing to provide constructive feedback and praise
  • Inspiring and encouraging others to create and share new ideas
