Sport England creates opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to play sport in every community.

In June 2008 we launched a new strategy to help community sport make the most of the unparalleled opportunities presented by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  We are committed to the following:

Our targets

We want to create a vibrant sporting culture and we have set ourselves specific and measurable targets to achieve by 2013:

  • One million people taking part in more sport
  • More children and young people taking part in sport for five hours every week
  • More people satisfied with their sporting experience
  • 25% fewer 16-18 year olds dropping out of five sports
  • Improved talent development in 25 sports.

Our outcomes

We want to achieve three outcomes for sport:

  • Grow
Approximately 15% of our investment will focus on getting one million people taking part in more sport, and our contribution to the Government’s five hour sports offer
  • Sustain
Approximately 60% of our investment will focus on sustaining participation by improving the quality of sport, and by reducing the number of young people who stop taking part
  • Excel
Approximately 25% of our investment will focus on developing systems and pathways to nurture talented sports people.

Our partners

We work with a range of partners, including:

  • The Youth Sport Trust, to increase sporting opportunities for children and young people
  • UK Sport, to ensure that talent systems link seamlessly from grassroots to elite
  • National governing bodies of sport, whose plans contribute towards the achievement of our outcomes
  • Local authorities, the main providers of local facilities and opportunities
  • County sports partnerships, which we will administer and fund at the national level
  • Equality partners, to ensure we reach every community
  • Clubs, coaches and volunteers.
